2011 Census – Please Help Make Sure Liverpool Counts

The Census will take place on Sunday 27 March 2011 and is conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The Census is an estimate of the population. Everyone is asked the same questions on the same day so that a snapshot of the population can be taken. It is the only time every person and household is counted right across the UK.

Census forms will be posted out to all Liverpool households in from 7 March for postal return. The form can also be completed online. From early April, ONS field team will make door-to-door visits to households that have failed to return a form.

The Census count is vital to Liverpool

  • Census data will be used to produce official population figures for the city for the next 10 years. These figures form the basis for funding from central government so (particularly during the current period of spending cuts) it is important that Liverpool’s population count is right. Traditionally Census response rates have been low in the city.
  • The Census provides us with data for small areas which is used to help plan local services such as schools, transport, housing and health and target resources to where they are most needed.
  • Census data is also used widely in developing bids for funding locally.

It is vital that everyone in Liverpool is counted in the Census.

Any information an individual provides on their Census form is strictly confidential. By law the Office for National Statistics cannot publish or share personal Census information with any outside body or with other government departments for at least 100 years. Please remember that the Census is compulsory.
