What do entrepreneur James Caan of the Dragons' Den, Chelsea footballer Salomon Kalou, and former president of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf have in common? They've all recently registered charitable trusts and foundations that feature in a new guide from Directory of Social Change (DSC).
DSC's first ever Guide to New Trusts features 100 grant-making trusts and foundations which were registered in 2010, none of which have appeared in print in any DSC publications before.
Author Tom Traynor says, "Many of these funders don't yet have any formal published guidelines for potential applicants or an established application process - they appear to be adopting a 'suck it and see' approach where they respond to applications they receive and develop their strategy and policies accordingly."
Some of them state that grants will only be made to organisations which are known to the trustees so this may be the perfect time for charities to make them aware of who they are and what they are trying to achieve. As ever, there are some important caveats to bear in mind - particularly that newly registered organisations may not be in a position to award grants immediately.
