Well-respected community activist Herbie Higgins MBE passed away on 9 November 2011. Higgins emigrated to Liverpool from Jamaica in 1951 and immersed himself in voluntary and community work after his retirement in 1985.
He was the founder and chair of the Jamaica Merseyside Association and treasurer and vice-chair of the Steve Biko Housing Association, amongst many others. In 1993, Higgins received a Merit Award from the Federation of Black Housing Associations, and in 1996 was awarded an MBE for outstanding Community Services. In 2003, he was presented with a Social Housing Lifetime Achievement Award. Before his death, he also received the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Merseyside Black Achievers Awards 2011.
Herbie Higgins's funeral will take place on Saturday 26 November 2011 at 12 noon in the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.
