Local Solutions has launched a new and free service which aims to combat fuel debt.

The Fuel Debt Advice Service is run by Local Solutions in partnership with the British Gas Energy Trust to help, support and guide individuals and families who are struggling to pay their energy bills or those who are concerned with running up high bills during the colder months.

Attending the launch event, the Shadow Minister for Energy & Climate Change, Luciana Berger said: “There has never been a more important time for agencies to work together. Liverpool has a proud tradition of innovation and to see British Gas working with Local Solutions, one of our leading social enterprises, is a great boost to people in our area, especially those struggling to pay fuel bills”.

The fully qualified team offer support in numerous ways one of which is help with grant applications that can clear arrears for people in hardship or in fuel debt and who meet certain criteria. They can also help people to find the best supplier for their needs, give energy efficiency advice and explain how to understand bills better.

Local Solutions’ CEO, Steve Hawkins said: “All the evidence suggests that greater numbers of people are going to fall into fuel poverty. The definition of fuel poverty is when a person spends 10% or more of their income on heat and light. Therefore this service has never been more needed. British Gas has shown great foresight in recognising the importance of supporting some of our more vulnerable citizens. We are delighted to work with them on this worthwhile initiative”.

Catherine May, Group Director of Corporate Affairs at British Gas added: "We know that many families and businesses in Liverpool are feeling the impact of the recession. This is why we want to bring more support to people in their local communities and help them cope in these difficult times. Our advice service is open to everyone who is worried about their finances – not only British Gas customers.

“There are many reasons why people fall into debt, and it’s important to spot the signs early on and offer support before the situation gets out of control. Last year British Gas helped more than a million customers with their bills, and in January this year we committed an extra £20 million to the British Gas Energy Trust to help people who are struggling with all their household bills.”

The team is based at Local Solutions’ headquarters at Mount Vernon Green, Hall Lane, L7 8TF. They are available on 0151 705 2382 (24 hour answer machine) or by e-mailing fueldebt@localsolutions.org.uk.
