Men from Liverpool are set to improve their heart health by taking part in a range of sporting activities and fitness sessions thanks to a Healthy Heart Grant of nearly £10,000. The ‘Look After Your Heart, Look After Your Soul’ project is being run by Everton Football Club's official charity Everton in the Community, alongside the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University and has been funded by national heart charity, Heart Research UK.
The 12-month project will work with men aged 18-35 from the most deprived areas of Liverpool who tend not to engage with health services. Participants will be able to improve their heart health by taking part in weekly football, boxing and circuit training sessions held at the Everton Family Centre in the grounds of Goodison Park.
There will also be an intensive 12-week programme of fitness and in-depth health screening for men who are at high risk of heart disease, such as those who are obese, homeless or recovering drug users. They will learn about their personal heart health by measuring their BMI, cholesterol levels and blood pressure along with an Electrocardiogram (ECG) to look at the structure and function of their hearts.
