Who is ready for the Big Society?

Consulting Inplace has undertaken statistical research to identify which places in England have the highest and lowest rates of volunteering, and participation in local decision making. Their reasoning is that those places may find it particularly easy or difficult respectively to put the Big Society into practice.

The report also identifies places which, though they may not be at the top or bottom of the table, nevertheless are more or less ready than would be expected, given factors that help to explain differences in preparedness – factors such as the occupations of local residents, for example.
