LCVS is now part of a larger global network called United Way Worldwide. To signify our relationship with this network of 1800 organisations in 41 countries we brand ourselves as LCVS | United Way.
A United Way is a volunteer-led, non-profit organisation located in a geographic community that seeks and addresses the root causes of key issues, is accountable for stewardship of resources and is accountable for short-term and long-term results.
United Way Worldwide Vision
United Way envisions a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, income stability and healthy lives.
United Way Worldwide Mission
To improve lives by mobilising the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.
What a United Way does
The issues local United Ways focus on are determined locally because of the diversity of the communities served. However, the main focus areas include education, income and health. A United Way:
- Brings together diverse partners at the local level to initiate action on community issues and problems.
- Leads, supports, and participates in community efforts that build capacity and generate resources to improve lives and create positive, long term social change in local communities.
- Encourages and promotes philanthropy, volunteering, effective non-profit service delivery and seeks to engage these resources in meeting local priorities.
- Is accountable to supporters for how it uses resources and to the community for the results it achieves.
United Way in UK
There has been a United Way in UK since 1978 and in 2008 it joined LCVS. LCVS | United Way now has the lead role in developing the United Way movement in UK. We are working with a number of Councils for Voluntary Service and similar organisations in developing the Community Impact approach and seeking affiliates to this movement.
