The Sheila Kay Fund

The Sheila Kay Fund (Registered Charity No. 2818044) was initiated in 1974 in memory of Sheila Kay, a social and anti poverty worker based on Merseyside. During her lifetime she brought together people of very varied backgrounds and experience and worked with them to benefit the community: She was particularly enthusiastic about promoting the talents of individuals who would in turn help others. Following Sheila's untimely death at the age of 46 and in recognition of the benefits of these aspects of her work, the Fund was established by her friends and colleagues.

The Fund assists with advice and grants individuals from Merseyside who:

  • Have a track record of voluntary activity in their community
  • Have identified learning or training opportunities related to youth, community or social work which will enable them to develop their own skills and, thereby, better serve their community.
  • Have missed out on earlier opportunities for formal education
  • Have limited economic resources to assist their educational advancement.

Over 8,500 people from Merseyside have benefitted from the Funds support since its inception with grants ranging from £60 to £250 for book, travel or childcare costs.

Unlike many other charities the Fund does not have a large charitable settlement to finance its work. Therefore the amount of support we provide is limited by the amount we raise on an annual basis.
