What is Standing Tall?

Standing Tall works with people experiencing homelessness, who are ready for full time employment. The people they work with are referred into them by professionals working at local charities and organisations.

Standing Tall was set up several years ago in Birmingham and expanded to London and Manchester soon after. In September 2024, they came to Liverpool and are now working across 8 cities.

How it works:

Referral

After receiving a referral, they will meet with people on a weekly basis for 2-3 months, getting to know them, listening to what work they have done before, and what their hopes are for the future.

Full-time Employment

Standing Tall works with local and national businesses who ringfence jobs for their people. This means anyone they put forward for a job is not in competition with anyone else and will not have to do a formal interview. These businesses understand and trust that they are putting forward a person who is well matched to their job opening.

Hosting

Once matched with a job, the person will be matched with a Host. Hosts are local people who have a spare room and want to open this up to someone in need. Their Hosts will offer some support to the person they are hosting, be this in developing their basic life skills or just being someone to talk to at the end of the working day. The person will pay rent to their Host from their wages.

Move-on Support

After 6 months, the person will be supported by Standing Tall to move out of their Host’s home and into a place of their own. Standing Tall offers continued support for around 1 year after the person begins their job. Through their work together, the individual gradually increases their confidence, independence and resilience.
