Black Access to Social Work: a route into the profession for diverse communities

This year sees the launch of a ground-breaking new degree programme at Liverpool Hope University, being run in conjunction with Liverpool City Council and spearheaded by the Lord Mayor Anna Rothery, who’s been a driving force behind the project.

The institutions say that too few people from the city’s Global Majority groups take-up roles in social work, which
has a significant knock-on effect for those needing care.

To combat that shortage the university and the council are creating 15 brand new spaces on Hope’s Social Work degree programme, exclusively for those from underrepresented communities.

One of the key elements of this Black Access to Social Work – a Route Into the Profession for Diverse Communities
course is that undergraduates won’t just complete a work placement, they’ll also be assigned an experienced mentor
– a black social worker already working on the front line for the council.

The idea is that the mentors can use their wealth of knowledge to guide students on their own career paths.
You can read all about the initiative, and meet the mentors, on the Liverpool Hope University website.

To launch Black Access to Social Work – a Route Into the Profession for Diverse Communities, a series of
fascinating webinars featuring some of the programme’s key figures (including the mentors) will be taking place throughout May, June and July 2021.

If you’re interested in applying, get more information by attending one of the webinars on:

• Wednesday 5th May, 6:30pm – 7:30pm
• Wednesday 2nd June, 6:30pm – 7:30pm
• Wednesday 7th July, 6:30pm – 7:30pm

To register your interest and receive more details please complete this form on the Hope website.

How do I apply for this degree programme?

To apply for the Black Access to Social Work – a Route Into the Profession for Diverse Communities applicants should first apply to the standard Social Work undergraduate degree at Hope through UCAS.

Once they’ve applied through UCAS, they should send details of their application, with their UCAS number, to socialwork@hope.ac.uk, stating that they wish to register their interest for the Black Access to Social Work – a Route Into the Profession for Diverse Communities pathway.

Applicants will then be contacted directly, with interviews due to take place in May and June.
