Constituency Caseworker: Office of Dan Carden MP

Contract: Fixed term.
Term: 6 months.
Salary: In line with IPSA payscales.
Hours per week: 15 hours.
Reporting to: Senior Caseworker.
Location: Liverpool L4.

Role purpose:

The post holder will provide advice, help and support to constituents living in Liverpool Walton on a wide range of issues. Applicants should have experience providing advice in areas including: housing, welfare and benefits, immigration, employment as well as other matters which affect our constituents.

Applicants should have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt their approach to meet the complex needs of each constituent. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, responsible and able to work under their own direction and as part of a small team.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage and progress casework appropriately
  • Respond to routine correspondence and enquiries from constituents, local stakeholders and pressure groups
  • Gather relevant information to resolve or progress cases
  • Liaise with members of the public by email, telephone, at surgeries, face to face etc.
  • Liaise with Liverpool City Council, Government agencies, the voluntary sector and others to resolve constituents issues
  • Ensure all cases are logged; monitor progress and ensure all identified actions are taken
  • Ensure records are kept and information managed confidentially and in line with GDPR
  • Attend surgeries and meetings as appropriate
  • Develop knowledge in specialist areas
  • Research local, regional or national issues to support the work of the office
  • Analyse, evaluate and interpret data to ensure Dan Carden MP is accurately informed on key issues and aware of trends affecting the Liverpool Walton constituency
  • Provide briefings for Dan Carden on matters affecting constituents to inform parliamentary contributions.

Person Specification

  1. Have at least 3 years experience in an advice service role handling cases involving the UK benefits system and issues including but not limited to housing, immigration, employment (E)
  2. Experience of working with clients with complex needs and sensitive information – engaging with clients professionally, confidentially, and with care and integrity. (E)
  3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with colleagues, clients and external agencies (E)
  4. Experience of advocating for and representing clients’ interests to third party organisations. (E)
  5. A strong understanding of the local area and relevant referral organisations (D)
  6. Ability to prioritise cases and work to urgent timescales, working effectively under pressure (E)
  7. Ability to work independently and as part of a small team (E)
  8. Effective use of IT, including Microsoft Office packages. (E)
  9. Experience using case management or client relationship management databases (D)
  10. A willingness to participate in opportunities for professional and personal development (E)
  11. Ability to identify trends and develop campaigns on social policy issues (D)
