Mental Health First Aid is the mental health equivalent of physical first aid.
While most people are aware of common physical health problems, there is often a lack of understanding about mental health issues. This leads to stigma and prejudice, discouraging those affected from seeking help. This course was established to provide people with knowledge of the signs and symptoms of a range of mental health issues and the confidence to intervene and guide a person to sources of professional support. Such early intervention can reduce distress, help to preserve life and empower a person experiencing mental ill health to access support for recovery.
This course is suitable for a range of different community settings, business and service sectors – from commercial companies to services such as the police and prison services.
Course overview:
- Day 1: Mental Health First Aid, mental health, depression and suicidal crisis
- Day 2: Anxiety, personality disorders, eating disorders, self-harm, psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
Research and evaluation shows that taking part in a Mental Health First Aid course:
- Raises awareness and mental health literacy
- Reduces stigma around mental ill health
- Boosts knowledge and confidence responding to mental health issues
- Promotes early intervention which enables recovery
