Friday 14 July 2017, 2.30-5.30pm – Prenton Park, Prenton Road West, Birkenhead, CH42 9PY.
Savera UK is a Merseyside-based charity, working to safeguard those at risk from horrific incidents of honour-based violence, female genital mutilation and forced marriage. Since Savera UK was set up in 2010, the charity has been dedicated to tackling domestic abuse within BME communities and raising awareness among professionals and practitioners about these harmful practices. Savera UK has made an outstanding contribution to protecting some of the most vulnerable and marginalised individuals in our local communities.
Savera UK holds this annual Liverpool city regional conference (National Memorial Day) in partnership with Wirral Connect and MSB Solicitors. The aim of the day is to honour the memory of those who were killed in the name of so-called ‘honour’. 14 July is the birthday of Shafilea Ahmed, a young girl from Warrington who was killed by her parents in front of her siblings. Her birthday has been chosen as an annual remembrance day for all those murdered in the name of ‘honour’. The day is also an opportunity for awareness raising and to ensure that services understand such issues.
Guest speaker is Nazir Afzal, former Chief Crown Prosecutor of the Crown Prosecution Service for North West, and Savera UK’s patron.
