Race Charter Launch: Keeping Race Equality on the Agenda

Liverpool John Moores University recently signed up to the ECU Race Charter and will be setting up a University-wide Race Charter working group to progress activities around Race Equality. The ECU Race Charter Award recognises, promotes and rewards good practice in the recruitment, retention and progression of staff and students from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Communities.

Following approval by LJMU SMT and Employment Committee, the plan is to launch the Race Charter activities with this symposium themed ‘Keeping Race Equality on the Agenda’.

Speakers:

  • From Myth to Reality? Race Equality and Education – Professor David Gillborn, Director of Research, School of Education, University of Birmingham
  • Respecting Difference: Challenges of Gender, Race, Faith and Culture in Higher Education – Professor Heidi Safia Mirza, Professor Emeritus of Equality Studies in Education
  • How to increase the number of Senior Black Academic and Professional Services Staff in HEIs – Dr. Winston Morgan, Reader in Toxicology and Clinical Biochemistry
  • The BME Degree Attainment Gap: The Black Hole of Institutional Delusion? – Professor Jacqueline Stevenson, Head of Research, Sheffield Institute of Education

The event, and the Race Charter Working Group, will be chaired by Professor Robin Leatherbarrow, Pro-Vice Chancellor Scholarship, Research and Knowledge Transfer.
