Third Sector colleagues are invited to a webinar from Liverpool Public Health at which an opportunity to access free e-cigarette starter kits for your clients/customers/ groups/ team members who want to quit smoking will be made available.
Over the past decade Liverpool has made significant progress in its work to tackle the harms caused by tobacco, seeing rates of smoking in the city almost halved (47% decrease). Smoking however, is still the leading cause of preventable death and illness in Liverpool. Two in three people who smoke will die from a smoking-related illness, with countless more left suffering from disability and disease. There remain an estimated 51,203 smokers living in Liverpool.
Whilst the Liverpool position is clear that people who do not smoke should not vape they recognize nonetheless, that E-cigarettes (vapes) are substantially less harmful to adults than smoking because they do not contain tobacco. Furthermore, it is also clear E-cigarettes have become the most popular choice of quitting aid in England and are extremely effective for many, particularly when combined with additional behavioural support from stop smoking services. They are up to twice as effective as the available licensed nicotine replacement therapy at one-fifth of the cost. Liverpool therefore, supports provision of vapes as a tool to support smokers to quit their habit.
On behalf of Liverpool, Public Health has already applied for E-Cigarette Starter Kits (E-cigarette, charger, atomiser and liquids) from the Department of Health via the national Swap to Stop Scheme. Our hospitals, primary care teams and Smokefree Liverpool (the community specialist stop smoking service) have already taken steps to access the kits for their own patients and clients. The same opportunity is now being offered to statutory, charity and voluntary sector partners.
