Foundation Years Trust – Trustee

This is a voluntary role.

Posts available: 2.
Hours: 3 meetings per year.

Foundation Years Trust (FYT) works with children between 0 – 5 years and their parents, supporting parents to nurture their children’s early development through playing, chatting and reading together. It is during the early years that the trajectory for the future is established. But many children, particularly those growing up in poverty, start school at age 5 already behind their wealthier peers.

However, there is strong evidence that shows the powerful influence parents/carers have on their child’s early development, and this influence cuts across social and economic divides. By supporting parents to improve the home learning environment, they can address this imbalance in attainment at the earliest stages, when it has the greatest impact on a child’s life chances. They are based in Wirral in the North West, with strong links across the Liverpool City Region.

What are they looking for in their Trustees?

FYT is at a turning point in their journey. Since they were established in 2012, they have learned a lot and tested various approaches and they have an amazing programme that fills a unique gap and complements their partner’s work.

Emerging from the shadow of Covid, there are new opportunities to enhance and extend their work, and to work more effectively with families of young children. It’s an exciting time to join them and to help shape the next 10 years of their work.

Their full Board meets 3 times every year and at least one of these meetings is in person. They also have a smaller Executive Committee that meets every 4 – 6 weeks online, to ensure more regular contact with the CEO.

Their Trustees help to guide the strategic direction and to ensure that they are meeting all of their governance requirements. They are also there in an individual capacity to help the team out occasionally on specific issues, sharing their expertise with the team.

What can they offer you?

They will make sure that your induction helps you learn your way around the programme and charity governance. They will also make sure that you get good training on the home learning environment and on the early years from their team, so you are completely familiar with their objectives. You can go and visit their groups and see the team in action.

It’s an opportunity to work with a great team and Board of Trustees and to support a small but very ambitious charity.

Their current trustees live all over the country, and you don’t have to be in the immediate area. If you have a local connection or knowledge, great, but it’s not critical.

Please contact them on info@foundationyearstrust.org.uk for a Trustee information pack or to schedule an informal call with the Charity Director, Anne-Louise van der Merwe.

Deadline: 30 November 2022.

Interviews with the Board of Trustees will be on a rolling basis through November and December.
