HDRC Liverpool – Public & Community Involvement Officer

Job Number: LCC04562.
Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract.
Salary: 33024 – 37336 GBP year.
Working Hours: 35 hours per week.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Liverpool City Council’s (LCC) new Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) – HDRC Liverpool is led by Liverpool City Council but is a partnership between the Council, the University of Liverpool (UoL), Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), Liverpool Healthwatch and Liverpool Charity and Voluntary Services (LCVS) and our local communities.

The Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) is a new element of NIHR research infrastructure funded by its Public Health Programme that will be based in local government. The purpose is to enable local authorities to become more research-active, undertake new research and use existing evidence to inform our decision making, and undertake evaluation activities. There will be a central focus on health inequalities and actions to tackle issues faced by local disadvantaged groups and areas.

Liverpool is one of 30 councils across the UK pioneering this new investment in local government. HDRC Liverpool will enable Liverpool City Council (LCC) to become a world leading centre for research. The programme will enable a culture of making evidence informed decisions by LCC and its partners to improve the determinants of health. This will lead to overall improvements in health outcomes and a narrowing of the health divide within the city.

HDRC Liverpool will build on existing strengths and make the best use of Liverpool’s data, the experience of our residents and our research and innovation skills. These assets will fuel the development of local solutions with global significance, for Liverpool and for other cities to improve the health of their residents.

This role represents a unique opportunity to join a new, pioneering team, to help grow and shape a new way of doing things and ultimately to have a big impact on outcomes for local people.

The HDRC programme runs for 5 years between Jan 2024-Dec 2028 and the funding for this post aligns with this timescale.

Their approach to community involvement aims to make the lived experience of residents central to priority setting and the production of new knowledge by developing the capacity of the voluntary, community, faith, and social enterprise (VCFSE) sector to use their existing ‘grass-roots” knowledge and by developing capacity for community led research.

As a Public and Community Involvement Manager,

You will work with their partners to build on approaches for engagement and involvement that are already developed in the city and ensure Liverpool’s diverse communities are represented across the HDRC.

  • You will be educated to post-graduate level, or with equivalent experience, you will have a good understanding of approaches to public involvement in research.
  • You will have excellent communication skills and be able to translate complex, scientific language, and concepts into easily understood materials.
  • you will involve members of the public and local communities to co-produce HDRC outputs as an effective facilitator.
