Health Equalities Group – Treasurer

This is a Voluntary Role.

Posts available: 1.
Location: Liverpool.

Employer Bio

Health Equalities Group (HEG) is a public health charity started in 2005 under the original name ‘Heart of Mersey’. The charity’s objective is the prevention of non-communicable diseases (cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers) and reduction of health inequalities in Cheshire and Merseyside (and beyond).

Their influence and impact over the last 17 years has been significant. HEG was the lead agency to advocate for an introduction of smoke-free policies in Liverpool ahead of national legislation in 2007 and was formative in bringing about the UK Government’s ‘Sugar Tax’ in 2018. HEG currently leads the North West’s healthy weight programme (Food Active) and delivers contracts for both NHS Cheshire and Merseyside and the Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance to prevent ill health. Their award-winning Healthy Stadia programme works with professional sports clubs across the UK and continental Europe to promote good health and wellbeing, whilst they have long standing research partnerships with University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, and Chester University.

Role Description

They are continuing a period of significant growth as they aim to further increase their social impact at regional and national levels. Their Board of Trustees currently includes leading figures from epidemiology, finance, marketing, the higher education sector, human resources and legal services.

They are now seeking a new trustee from an accountancy / finance background to become Treasurer for the charity owing to the current Treasurer stepping down in May 2023 after over 6 years in the post. They would particularly value the following skills and experience:

  • A qualified finance professional with significant post-qualification experience
  • Experience of scrutinising management accounts and end of year audit accounts
  • Experience of managing finance committees or sub-groups
  • Experience of working with public sector clients or organisations from the Voluntary, Community, Faith & Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector.

What can they offer you?

This is an exciting and potentially very rewarding role. You will be supporting an organisation that is recognised at both regional and national levels for their work on tackling health inequalities. You will be part of an ambitious, growing organisation that is delivering public benefit through their research, health interventions, campaigns and advocacy activities. You would also, if you wished, be able to act as an ‘Ambassador’ for the group at selected events and ceremonies during the year.

They can thus offer to facilitate your own professional development. In addition to gaining experience as a trustee of a very successful and effective third sector charity, you will have opportunities to develop further expertise at both local and national levels.

The role is well assisted by NWHS Business Support, who provide the charity’s financial and management accounting support services. The role includes attendance at four evening-based Trustee meetings per year (currently online) with Finance Committee meetings arranged beforehand. As a registered charity, they would be able to reimburse reasonable expenses.

If you are interested in applying for a trustee position with Health Equalities Group, please send a brief CV and a one page letter of application illustrating why you are interested in the role, how your skills and experience are aligned to the areas of expertise they require, any previous experience of acting as a trustee, and how you will add overall value to the Board. Please send CV and brief letter of application to: info@hegroup.org.uk.

Deadline: Friday 21 April 2023.

Interviews: Early May 2023.

For any initial enquiries or an informal chat about these roles, please contact HEG Executive Director, Matthew Philpott on 07826533013.
