Liverpool City Council are excited to launch their new Healthy Weight service

Residents in Liverpool will soon be able to access a new Healthy Weight Service, which has been developed with local residents using behavioural insight and consultation.

From January 2025 Ice Creates will deliver a Healthy Weight Service that will offer a variety of programs to support families, and adults to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. In the new year community and stakeholder engagement and consultation will help embed this critical service offer into local neighbourhoods.

Currently over half of adults in Liverpool have excess weight (63%), and one in four children are starting school overweight or obese. This progresses to one in three children aged 11 being overweight or obese (Year 6).

Delivered in a range of venues across all 13 Neighbourhoods the Healthy Weight Service will provide families and adults with the tools and practical support needed to achieve a healthier weight. The service will also deliver a maternity offer for pregnant women and support for schools.

Support will include one-to-one coaching, “Weigh & Stay” groups and Slimming World. It will be a varied offer that will combine digital and in-person elements including an app for self-monitoring, bespoke support for targeted groups, a physical activity and leisure offer, “Weigh & Go” (a lighter-touch option), and maintenance support.

Coach-Led Sessions will be available for Children, Young People, and Families including group and one-to-one sessions covering various topics related to healthy living, and the “Best You” App: Digital support, complemented by a 12-month maintenance plan.

There will also be a universal offer including a website, app, ‘Move it’ virtual gym, schools ‘healthy me’ programme and targeted campaigns.

This service will play a vital role in a whole systems approach to improving the health of our population, particularly where the impact of excess weight is concerned.  They will also play a key part in our ambitious ‘Good Food’ Plan that aims to ensure everyone has access to healthy, nutritious food across the city.

Key Outcomes Expected:

  • Reduction in the number of residents (adults and children) classified as overweight or obese.
  • Increased awareness and engagement in healthy weight maintenance and prevention activities.
  • Enhanced public health capacity across Liverpool, supporting long-term positive health outcomes.

Next Steps: The service provider is now working on service mobilisation, including staff recruitment and training, setting up systems and making arrangements for the official launch of the service which will be in January 2025.

Referral pathways will be developed accordingly with further details to be shared.
