Mayor of Liverpool invests £58,000 in community crowdfundng projects

Rebuilding a community radio station, converting a container into a clubhouse and installing a new community cinema screen are among nine ambitious new projects that have been given a major boost towards their crowdfunding targets by the Mayor of Liverpool.

The chosen ideas, which were created for the local community, by the local community, were selected from suggestions put forward as part of crowdfunding programme, Crowdfund Liverpool.

Anybody can chip in as little as £2 to help bring these local projects to life. Leading from the front, the Mayor of Liverpool has put forward a dedicated £100,000 fund to help projects running crowdfunding campaigns get off the ground.

The following new projects are crowdfunding now. Collectively, they recently received pledges from the Mayor totalling £58,558. You can still chip in to any that you would like to support:

• Anfield Community Cinema: £10,000 from Mayor Anderson will support the installation of a new screen to help bring the Liverpool Lighthouse cinema back to life
• Thrive-Care Leavers Career Hub: £4,760 from Mayor Anderson will help a project that connects employers with young people in care and care leavers who are experiencing digital poverty to help them live happy, safe and fulfilling lives
• Grandison Road Allotments Accessible Clubhouse: £4,430 from Mayor Anderson will help convert a container into a tearoom and clubhouse, providing a place for the community of Clubmoor to connect
• Toxteth Community Radio: £7,618 from Mayor Anderson will support the relaunch of a community radio station for Toxteth, providing a way for young people to create and air their own shows while lifting community spirits
• Culture And Sports Community Cafe: £10,000 from Mayor Anderson will contribute towards the creation of the Dingle Cultural Hub Café, proving a space for communities in Toxteth to enjoy
• Community Kitchen @ The Unity: £9,650 from Mayor Anderson will help build a community kitchen that will host multicultural, intergenerational cookery projects that tackle food poverty and food waste
• Let’s Get Active Tuebrook: £690 from Mayor Anderson will help ensure ex-offenders have access to exercise sessions that will help them rehabilitate back into the local community of Tuebrook
• The Pop Up Panto: £7,390 from Mayor Anderson will help convert a van into a touring theatre show that employs local performers to entertain schoolchildren safely across the city
• Gardening to Combat Anxiety & Loneliness: £4,020 from Mayor Anderson will enable a therapist to work with people with social anxiety to get involved in local projects to enhance green spaces

These crowdfunding campaigns are part of a joint initiative between the Mayor of Liverpool and Spacehive, the UK’s leading civic crowdfunding platform. Crowdfund Liverpool provides the people of Liverpool with chance to pitch creative, community-led projects and secure funding of up to £10,000 from the Mayoral Inclusive Growth Fund, alongside pledges from their community.

Sarah Jones, Venue Manager at Liverpool Lighthouse said, “Words cannot describe how grateful we are to receive the full £10,000 pledge from the Mayoral Inclusive Growth fund to help make this dream of ours a reality for North Liverpool! To be able to bring back the picture house history of Liverpool Lighthouse, which originally opened as Gaumont Palace in 1931 has always been a huge passion of ours and the community.”

“Particularly during these times, we all really need something to look forward to, and by receiving this amazing funding it puts us one step closer to bringing film back to our disadvantaged area. 2021 will be the year for our community and we cannot wait to be hosting film screenings on the regular.”

Crowdfund Liverpool forms part of a new approach to civic planning by Liverpool City Council which sees crowdfunding as a key channel to involve communities in regeneration.
