The Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine provides a comprehensive programme of postgraduate courses, from standalone courses to a full Master’s Degree validated by Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh. Their courses are aimed at physiotherapists, GPs, consultants, podiatrists, osteopaths, and other healthcare registered professionals – UK & overseas.

The Society is a leading provider of musculoskeletal therapy and training. Set up in 1979 to carry on the pioneering work of Dr James Cyriax, The Society is focused on advancing study in the field and opening the door for new practitioners and therapists.

The Society’s Foundation syllabus is divided into three units that include the principles of assessment, clinical diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions affecting the ten areas of the body: Cervical Spine, Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist/Hand, Lumbar Spine, Hip, Knee, Ankle/Foot, Thoracic Spine, and the Sacroiliac Joint. The Advanced Modules build on the foundation principles to enhance skills in Injection Therapy and Advancing Clinical Practice.

In recent years, they’ve run courses across Ireland, Italy, Spain, Norway, Arabia and Hong Kong and they’re always looking to expand the future of musculoskeletal medicine.

Job Purpose

Providing financial support to The Society Manager and treasurer in all financial aspects that enable him/her to provide accurate reports and information to the SOMM Council.

Key responsibilities:

  1. The complete operational control of accounting package including, purchases sales, journals, cash book, nominal ledger
  2.  The complete preparation of the month end accounts, including profit & loss account and balance sheet
  3. Credit control encompassing, monitoring payments, chasing payments producing statements as required
  4. The maintenance of the bank account and month end reconciliations
  5. Liaise with SOMM’s nominated Accountants in respect of payroll when necessary
  6. Support Society Manager and Treasurer with the preparation and review of the SOMM Budget
  7. Preparation and review of any Management Reports that may be required
  8. Provide support as required by SOMM’s Independent Examiner in order to finalise annual accounts by way of, collated information and figures for SOFA, Income and Expenditure statement, Balance sheet
  9. Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements as relating Company and Charity law including, submission of annual returns to Companies House and Charity Commission when required
  10. Providing a high standard of customer service, both written and verbal, by resolving all queries promptly and effectively
  11. Ensure that all paperwork is filed appropriately and in a timely manner
  12. To be an active member of the SOMM staff team through, attending relevant training to improve competence, confidence and performance
  13. Providing office cover during colleagues’ absences
  14. Proactively contributing to the future strategic direction of SOMM and raise profile

Person Specification

  1. Relevant experience
  2. Xero (accounting software) extensive experience is essential
  3. Excellent communication skills.
  4. Self-motivated but can equally function as part of a team
  5. Possess initiative and excellent problem solving
  6. Excellent time management skills, working to deadlines, and possessing the ability to prioritise tasks and to multi-task
  7. General IT literacy (Microsoft Office & accounting software)
  8. Ability to meet and achieve tight internal and external deadlines
  9. Able to receive direction and deliver against direction.

Reporting Relationships

  • You will report Society Manager
  • Secondary reporting to Office Support Trustee.
