The Stroke Association is looking for volunteers in the Liverpool area

The Stroke Association believe everyone deserves to live the best life they can after a stroke. And it’s a team effort to get there. They provide specialist support, fund critical research and campaign to make sure people affected by stroke get the very best care and support to rebuild their lives.

They are now looking for two Communication Service Supporters (volunteers) who are over the age of 18 years old to join them.

Role Details:

  • They will be based at Vienna Court, Durban Road, Liverpool L13 5SY
  • They will be volunteering in blocks of 6 weeks, every Wednesday from 10.30 am to 12 pm
  • The first block will run between 14 September and 19 October 2022. The next block will start in February the following year
  • This role will require recurring commitment
  • A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required for this role
  • This role would be suitable for speech and language students or applicants to get some practice in a non-clinical therapeutic group setting, but anyone (including retired people/working people etc) can volunteer if they are available during what will be term times throughout the year (they will try to avoid academic holidays when running the group).

The volunteers will:

  • Assist stroke survivors in developing their communication skills in small groups
  • Assist stroke survivors in developing their communication skills on a one-to-one basis in their homes or out in their local community so that they can access activities and services
  • Adapt to the specific needs of the person they are working with in order to support them in the most appropriate way
  • Need to be willing to learn and use the technique, called ‘supported conversation’, which is used to support people with communication difficulties (they will provide training).

If would like further information, please contact Emmalene Brunes, Stroke Support Coordinator, on 0151 305 0022/ 07739 745 212 or Emmalene.brunes@stroke.org.uk.
