Basic Suicide Prevention for Trainers

Training Date: 28 February 2018

Wednesday 28 February and Thursday 1 March 2018, 9.30am-4.30pm – Samaritans Training Centre, Alan Woodhouse Meeting Room, 25 Clarence Street, Liverpool, L3, 5TN.

Public Health are recruiting for people interested in delivering basic suicide prevention training to frontline workers and communities in Liverpool.

Liverpool is part of the Cheshire and Merseyside Public Health Collaborative who have developed a joint NO MORE Suicide zero suicide strategy for Cheshire and Merseyside 2015-2020. The vision for the strategy is that the region becomes a place where suicides are eliminated and where people do not consider suicide as a solution to the difficulties they face. A region that supports people at a time of personal crisis and builds individual and community resilience for improved lives.

The elimination of preventable deaths is a key public health concern. The impact of suicide on family, friends, workplaces, schools and communities can be devastating. Suicide carries a huge financial burden for the local economy and contributes to worsening inequalities. Friends and relatives of people who die by suicide have a 1 in 10 risk of making a suicide attempt after their loss, and they experience severe effects on their health, quality of life, ability to function well at work and in their personal lives.

The local partnership recognises that there is no single cause or solution to suicide, but a requirement for joint, collaborative effort utilising evidence- based interventions, intelligence and drive to eradicate this preventable death. That is why we are investing in training as many people as we can in basic suicide prevention training.

Commissioned by the Cheshire and Merseyside Public Health Collaborative (CHAMPs) Wirral MIND has developed a free two day Train the Trainer course in basic suicide prevention. It aims to:

Equip the participants with the skills to deliver a half day workshop on suicide prevention to 10-15 participants
Enable participants to identify and source resources and support for session delivery
Provide some consistency in suicide prevention training that is offered across the Cheshire and Merseyside area
Support local and national strategy in the prevention of suicide

Besides the free two-day training, you will get access to a peer support network, further training and feedback from evaluation of sessions. A £100 charge will apply if you do not attend part or whole of the course.

Your commitment:

  • Your employing agency supports you in delivering 4 (3 hour) sessions to a minimum of 40 individuals during one year
  • You discuss target audiences for the training with your public health lead
  • You prepare appropriately for delivery, before the date of each session
  • You evaluate the sessions using the framework provided
  • You return evaluations after each session to your public health lead
  • You contribute to support meetings of the network of suicide prevention trainers

If you are interested, contact sue.neely@liverpool.gov.uk. You will need your manager or agency’s support.
