Becoming a charity is a big step in the life of an organisation. It brings with it many advantages. For example, being a charity will make your organisation eligible to a wider range of funding, give it greater public legitimacy and provide tax/rate relief and gift aid opportunities.
It also comes with some limitations, such as limits to employing board members and trading beyond primary purposes. It also brings with it additional reporting obligations and potential risk of liability for non-compliance.
The training will look at:
- What makes a charity a charity?
- The pros and cons of charitable status
- The setting up process, including deciding your charitable purpose and legal structure, creating governing documents and other paperwork that will support a successful application and a guide to the online registration form itself
- Roles and responsibilities you will have once charity status is secured, including reporting requirements
This course is ideal for current and potential trustees, as well as staff and volunteers running or considering running a charity.
Please note that this course was originally titled Setting Up and Becoming a Charity, and that it has been postponed from Monday 22 January 2018.
