Wheelchairs on the Water

Local Solutions is appealing for help to raise funds for a specialist boat that will give wheelchair users access to watersports activities in the city’s historic docks.

The charity, which operates across Merseyside and North Wales, runs Liverpool Watersports Centre in Queen’s Dock. The centre offers a range of activities that aim to make watersports accessible to all, however, the activities available to disabled people are limited.  In order to expand their offering, Local Solutions is working in partnership with The Wheelyboat Trust to purchase a V20 – the latest Wheelyboat model.

This specialist boat features a hinged door that lowers to create a ramp so wheelchairs can be rolled on and off providing hassle free and independent access to activities ranging from powerboating to cultural tours.  The Wheelyboat will be a welcome addition to the city as the nearest one is currently in North Wales making it difficult for disabled people living in Liverpool to access.

John Hannaway, manager of Liverpool Watersports Centre, said “A Wheelyboat will be an exciting and valuable addition to our watersports centre.  We currently offer a whole range of activities, however, this would allow us to extend our reach making it easier for people with disabilities to get involved”
